Steps

  1. Step 1. Open Duplicates

Press ⇧⌘I. Three steps run across the stage. Saved scan is your last Storage scan. Same size is every group of files with exactly the same size, found from the scan without reading a single file. They are candidates, nothing more.

    Step 01
  2. Step 2. Verify the contents

Click Verify Contents…. l/Activity reads the candidates and compares them, first by samples and then by a full fingerprint of each file. Only files whose entire contents match move on. Tick Selected group only to check one group instead of all of them.

Large files take time. You can Pause and resume later.

    Step 02
  3. Step 3. Open a verified group

Click the third step, Verified identical. Each group on the left is a set of files proven to be the same. Select one to see every copy with its folder, size and date.

    Step 03
  4. Step 4. Keep one, select the extras

Above the copies, Suggested keeper names the copy l/Activity proposes to keep. Click Select Extras. Every other copy is ticked and the keeper is left alone, marked Keeping. To keep a different copy, right-click it and choose Keep This Copy.

    Step 04
  5. Step 5. Review and remove

The stage counts what is selected, and the basket bar confirms that the keeper is preserved. Click Review… and then Move to Trash. Before anything is moved, the extras and their keeper are compared in full one more time.

    Step 05
  6. Step 6. Photos that only look alike

The second view in the title bar, Similar photos, compares the pictures in a folder you choose and groups the ones that look alike. This view is for looking only. Nothing can be removed from it. If you decide a photo should go, reveal it in Finder.

02Good to know

The small print, in plain words

  • Note1 / 3

Same size is not the same file

Two files of equal size are often different. That is why candidates are labelled Unverified and why you should verify before trusting a group.

  • Note2 / 3

    Ticking by hand

You can tick any files yourself, including every copy in a group. Those selections are marked as manual, and l/Activity does not guarantee that a copy remains.

  • Note3 / 3

    How much you get back

"Extra logical bytes" is the combined length of the extra copies. Copies that share disk blocks free less than that when removed.
